2018 Stewardship Campaign

Have you ever been in worship with a community that didn’t sing out? It’s not a very enlivening or encouraging experience. It’s awkward. When I find myself stranded in a sea of silent book-holders, I’m tempted to sing as quietly as possible or to be silent.

GingerThere's something about a congregation that really sings together that encourages participation. Singing together is an important part of our Wesleyan heritage. It is a primary way we learn about God, pray to God, and give praise to God. Singing also inspires a sense of community and connection. Sometimes in worship our Director of Music Ministries, Stanley Thurston, stops playing the piano or organ and all we hear are our voices in harmony. There is something deeply powerful about that. It is a reminder that we are not alone and that, together, we create something unique and beautiful.

Our voices come together in a harmony called “Foundry.” That’s part of what it means to say, “I Am Foundry.” If you worship at Foundry or serve at Foundry or give to Foundry or pray for Foundry or speak well of Foundry to others; if you organize, lead, sing, or have friends at Foundry, you contribute to the shape and vitality of our life together

You see the impact we make when not only our voices, but our gifts of time, talent, and treasure are shared. Some highlights of the past year include:

  • Increased hospitality ministry and outreach
  • Growing worship attendance
  • Liturgy and music enhancements
  • New adult study opportunities
  • Launched new small groups
  • Creatively maintained Children’s Ministry, even in a time of challenge and loss
  • Advocated significantly for LGBTQ at Annual Conference
  • Strengthened mission partnerships such as Sanctuary DMV
  • Responded to immediate context and mobilized through Sacred Resistance

As we look ahead, there are some important steps to take and shifts to make on the horizon. It’s a song we can only sing together. I hope you’ll take the time to review what follows and consider the variety of opportunities to change the world through the mission and ministry of Foundry Church.

Many of you may have noticed that I love to sing. I love and know many hymns of the church by heart – picking a favorite is impossible! But as I think about the year ahead, this stanza from “We Are Called” (The Faith We Sing) comes to mind:

Sing, sing a new song!
Sing of that great day when all will be one!
God will reign, and we’ll walk with each other as sisters and brothers united in love!
We are called to act with justice;
We are called to love tenderly.
We are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God.

In Christ,
