Psalm 51:1-19

Israel wanted a king like other nations had.

God said no. Israel pouted and complained until God let them
have a king.

I want to suggest that Israel wanted more than a king.
Israel wanted a hero.

Israel’s first king was a mistake. His name was Saul and he
was chosen, at least in part, because he looked like a king. He was handsome
and he was tall. I Sam. 9:2 says “There was not a man among the people of
Israel more handsome than he; he stood head and shoulders above everyone else.”

Handsome and tall. He looked like a king, he looked like a
hero.

But he wasn’t. He turned out to be insecure and
anxiety-ridden and cowardly.
