There's A Spirit in This Place
I Feel the Love of God at Foundry Every Day
I am Foundry. Foundry is my family. There is a spirit in this place. For me, I discovered this spirit of love about three years ago when I stepped into Foundry one wintry afternoon for the 5:30 p.m. service. At the last 5:30 p.m. service, Logan Alley and TC Morrow suggested I come to the 9:30 a.m. service. At that service I met my pew mates Carolinda, Doris, Arthur and Erline. They reached out to me with open arms, saying, "Welcome, John."
Since then, I have taken a storyteller's workshop with Pastor T, joined a sign language class with Leo and started attending the 9:30 service on a regular basis. I started to meet different people in these groups. I didn't realize it then, but with each new person I met, my "family" was getting bigger and bigger.
I grew up in a small town in Adamsville, Alabama, and in The United Methodist Church. As I drifted away from my home in Alabama, I drifted away from my faith and other parts of my life. I was lost. My mother would say, "We love you, but you got to get your life together." My biological family's version of tough love worked because it led me to find my spiritual family at Foundry.
Here I am three years later, singing with both choirs and participating in Bible studies. I help out wherever and whenever I can: in some very public ways and in some private ways. I feel the love of God, the love of Jesus Christ and the love of the Holy Spirit every day I walk into and out of the doors of Foundry. I can't quite put my finger on it or tell you exactly what it is, but I know "there is a spirit in this place." I think it is love.
During last year's stewardship campaign, I pledged to support Foundry financially for the first time. My contribution comes directly out of my paycheck. I don't even notice it's gone. But it is important, because it supports this community of love. Love is priceless. I will be forever grateful for the gifts I have received from my Foundry family.
