A Future with Hope

My first Sunday at Foundry was not a typical Sunday.

The United Methodist Church had just voted in opposition to LGBTQ clergy and same-sex weddings.

When we walked through the doors, there were hardly any open seats in the sanctuary. My partner and I, shortly after we were together, felt a calling to re-engage with our faith and find a church home where we could grow closer to one another and to God. We were not aware of the external circumstances that had just sent a shockwave through so many communities like ours, but we felt instantly at home, surrounded by friendly faces and an unmistakable sense of belonging and acceptance.

A year later, as the entire world was turned upside down by a once in a lifetime public health emergency, Foundry remained an anchor in our lives. We grew closer to the church despite the distance, and our faith grew stronger still.

When my husband and I got married, we were humbled that Pastor Ginger was there to affirm our love and union in the presence of God. She brought her “Foundry welcome” with her that day to a small Virginia winery — a comforting and singular reminder that no matter what, God loves you and wants to have a relationship with you.

We treasure the support Foundry has given us, and we are blessed to support its mission to realize the sacred vision of God’s preferred future that is shared with us in scripture: a world that is full of hope, goodwill, peace, and community. I know you’ll agree when I say that this church is a shining light that is so needed in our world today.

Foundry understands that turning this vision into a reality extends beyond our little corner on 16th & P in Washington, DC. It means lending a hand to those in our community who are deserving of care, dignity, and opportunities. It means practicing the radical hospitality that we are called to live by that will give way to a better tomorrow.

Just like I think that our first Sunday at Foundry was no accident, I believe that we are all called to follow in the footsteps of Christ’s example, and we are forever grateful that God brought Foundry into our lives.

Truly, we are all so fortunate to be members of the Foundry family. Its leaders and many volunteers have impacted so many lives for the better — and our work is only getting started.

I hope you will join me in submitting your 2023 estimate of giving, so that we may continue to provide this support, this community, and this promise of a future with hope for so many in our city and beyond.
